Vintage art by W.L. Stevenson
16 x 20" oil on board, signed lower left; unframed
From my private home collection of art, oil on board by Canadian Artist William Lewy Leroy Stevenson, 1905-1966, one of Canada's greatest artists. -Harley
Self-taught, except for two years in evening classes, he became influenced by Gauguin, van Gogh and
Cézanne. When his work was shown in Calgary in 1928 it shocked the local
artists, public and press. Stevenson’s paintings
suggest “the rich feeling of the earth.” Early in his career as an artist, Stevenson became friends with the artist Maxwell Bates, who provided the impetus for Stevenson to discover the French modernist movement. Mr. Stevenson taught at the Calgary Art Centre, Banff School of Fine Arts
and at the time of his tragic car accident in December 1966, was teaching at
the University of Calgary- Extension Division.
